like any business you want to start, a woodworking business at home must be planned and strated in an efficient manner. You must abtain accurate knowledge and assess whether you have the skills and time to complete the process. There are too many people out there who attempt to start a business but end up failing due to improper planning and a lack of proper knowledge. In order to succeed, you must understand the business you are planning on starting and follow through with a determination to succeed.
Getting Started:
Once you decide you want to move forward and begin the business, you must begin the planning stages and the first thing is to set up shop. Do you have a garage? What about a basement? A garage is generally better due to easy access, better lighting and better ventilation. A basement is often more convenient and it has better temperature control and a solid floor to set machinery on. A basement must be set up with some ventilation to keep that saw dust from getting into the furnice or electrical system.A basement will likely create a challenge when trying to move larger items like band saws and lathes into the the basement. Ventilation is an important part of any shop but it is even more important in a woodworking basement shop. Noise is also a thing to keep in mind. A basement can shield noise from the neighborhood but your family upstairs will not be too happy with all of that woodworking. A common sense item is good, even lighting to insure high quality work.
safety Concerns:
satety is very important as you would imagine but it can often be pushed aside due to the excitement of getting a new woodworking business started. safety can be boring but it is a must. Things like a multi-purpose fire extinguisher, smoke detector and if possible a sprinkler system. It will also be good to actually know how to properly operate all of the equipment in the woodworking shop.It is always wise to store flammable products in a cabinet designed for this type of storage. To keep your lungs healthy you will want to use maskes and cartridge resperators. A central ventilation system that collects saw dust is a great addition to a professional woodworking shop. A decent first-aid kit to help treat minor cuts, burns and eye contamination.
Another safety concern is over drawing current due to the large current draw from all of the equipment. It would be wise early on to determine which equipment you will purchase and the average current draw of each in order to determine if you need to add another dedicated power source with its own breaker set at the correct amperage rating.
